WEST CUMBRIA BRANCH CHAIRMANS REPORT

Another year has gone and here I am writing my report again, it has been a good summer and it’s doing well this autumn “up to pres.” forgetting one day last week ‘flash floods’ a bit like last January without the wind. Never mind, lambs have been looking well for the sales this backend.

West Cumbria’s first event was a new venture, the Woolfest held at Cockermouth Mart. We didn’t know what to expect but we set the NEMSA stand up and with some good geld hoggs on show, supplied by Benson Hewitson we were ready. A good two days was had. With the hoggs full of wool we were trying to promote the wool the best we could, with a good team of committee men’s wives helping. Made my two days a lot easier, Thank you ladies.

The next event was the Royal with Teesdale Branch and my first time at the Show, spending Monday and Tuesday there. Monday was very busy on the stand, a lot of interest. “A very entertaining night followed”. William Lawson and Benson again supplied the sheep and lambs that really looked well. Thank you chaps. I would just like to thank Stuart Bell for helping us with the transport.

Wednesday 17 August West Cumbria Branch NEMSA wether lamb show was a great success with 12 pens out to show – most lambs making about £1 per kg.
1st - M/s Mawson, High Side. 2nd - M/s Willson, Grange Farm. 3rd - M/s Nicholson, Swinside End. 4th - M/s Emmott, Wythop Hall. A very good show for the time of year.

The first sale of gimmer lambs was held at Hopes of Wigton, a very good trade throughout. Messrs. Mawson, High Side had the first and champion pen.
Principal Prices
£100 Messrs Mawson High Side

H&H Carlisle was next, another good show of lambs. A nice trade again. Highest placed NEMSA member in show was John Smith-Jackson making £130.

Cockermouth was the last to go. A tremendous good show of show lambs. Top lambs made good prices. Show results

With 18 pens out to Show mostly members, was nice to see. Following the sale later that evening we held our very popular dinner and “Crak” – a good night was had by all.
