SKIPTON BRANCH REPORT

As I am writing my last report as Skipton Branch Chairman, I would like to thank all committee members and all those who have helped me in my term of office.

Our first event of the year was on January 18th; this was the Northern Sheep Fair at Skipton Auction. Peter and Robert Fox kindly supplied us with a pen of in-lamb Mule hoggs for our stand, the large amount of people who attended made the day into being a successful one.

Our next trip out was North Sheep at Whinfell Park. What an excellent venue for such a big event. Looking round all the trade stands one realises how many other people make a living out of the sheep industry. We shared the NEMSA stand with Northumberland Branch and we had on display 2 Mule hoggs with Suffolk lam s and a 3 shear ewe with Beltex twin lambs.

Summer seemed to go nowhere and depending where you lived and if you caught all those thunder-showers was the difference of enough grass or being burnt up. The next big event I would like to mention was Kilnsey Show. There was a record crowd round the pens watching the judging which was a mammoth task. I think this was the best show of gimmer lambs I have ever seen at Kilnsey. Congratulations to those who won prizes, but most of all congratulations to everybody who showed, making the show a highlight of the NEMSA year.

A week later it was our first sale and I would like to thank our sponsors Farmsense, Barclays, G Dunne and Laycocks for their kind sponsorship. Before the sale started we had a minute’s silence for Val Caton; a fitting tribute to a gentleman who had done so much work over the year’s for NEMSA.

the market, most rewarding these lambs were bought by a private butcher.
