KIRKBY STEPHEN BRANCH REPORT
It just seems like yesterday but after three years,
I’m writing my final report as Chairman of the Kirkby Stephen
Branch.
Once again, Kirkby joined forces with Lazonby Branch,
at the Royal Cornwall Show. Martin & Valerie Brown did us proud,
supplying sheep in immaculate condition, which caused plenty of
interest on the stand; even the Charolais men from the next tent
said they were “real outfits.”
Buyers seemed to expect lambs to be a similar trade
to last year but in the following months, the downward trend of
the fat market didn’t help our cause.
Sale time arrived, with glorious weather for preparing
the lambs. Once again the show was held the night before the sale,
over 20 pens turned out, all looking well. Buyers and breeders from
all over the country created a large crowd, making this a great
event. Our thanks must go to Harrison & Hetherington for kindly
providing refreshments and also the sponsors: Eden Farm Supplies
(Brough); Carrs Billington (Hawes); Pye Bibby and Dugdale Nutrition.
The judging was in the hands of Cecil Hutchinson
and Richard Sawbridge, with Alan Davidson acting as referee. The

Sale day and one of the wettest days anybody can remember,
lambs looked half the size. Initially, vendors were slightly disappointed
with the trade but in hindsight and, looking back over all the sales,
things didn’t turn out so bad. Even the smile re-appeared
on the face of our Senior Auctioneer!!
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to
thank Christine Lambert, our Secretary and the committee for all
their support over the last three years.
The future for all of us remains uncertain but I’m sure that
if we all pull together and keep standards as high as we can, we
can look to the future with confidence; after all we are producing
the most popular breeding sheep in Britain.
