NORTHUMBERLAND BRANCH REPORT 2006
As we enjoy the mild weather in early October, it is easy to forget
how wet and cold it was in the spring. Sleet, snow and a cold east wind, coupled with
the drought and shortage of grass many of us experienced in July, it is amazing how
many lambs survived to make it through to the ewe lamb sales this backend.
However there was a very good show of lambs at the Northumberland
regions two NEMSA sales. At the pre-sale show on the 31st August, the prizes for the
best pen of 25 went to:
| 1st |
J Browell & Sons |
Quarry House |
| 2nd |
R D Archer & Son |
Carry House |
| 3rd |
R English & Son |
Brownsleazes |
Tupping lambs were down on last year but still a decent trade. Smaller
running lambs were a lot harder to sell.
At the sale on the 16th September, once again there was a good show of lambs with the prizes awarded to
| Best pen of 10 (ex Blackface) |
| 1st |
T L Forster & Son |
Lowes Fell |
| 2nd |
M W & C M Ridley |
Shitlington Hall |
| 3rd |
T Fox |
Elsdon Burn |
| Best pen of 10 (ex Swaledale) |
| 1st |
W J Scott |
Low Leam |
| 2nd |
E Armstrong |
Harlow Bower |
| 3rd |
L & D Archer |
Stone Stile |
The overall Champion Pen was awarded to Low Leam and Reserve to Lowes Fell.
Once again strong tupping lambs were a decent trade but smaller running
lambs were not in great demand.
As with most mule lamb sales the averages will be down on the year.
It was noticeable that lambs with good body and conformation were easily
sold, maybe it is time for us as breeders to think about putting smaller, poorer lambs
into the fat.
