G & M F TURNBULL & SONS
Whashton Springs Farm, Richmond, North Yorks.

A total of 1450acres is farmed of which 427acres is grassland and 267acres is rough grazing. All the grassland and rough grazing has Less Favoured Area status rising to 1100ft above sea level. Stock numbers are 1050 Mule ewes, 240 Swaledale ewes and 190 suckler cows. The Swaledales mainly graze the rough grassland, and are put to Bluefaced Leicester tups to lamb in April. Mule ewe lambs are transferred to the Mule flock with 80 to 100 being tupped as ewe lambs.

The Mule flock uses the better grazing and ewes are put to Texel rams to lamb in March. Winter feed is based on silage and a home mix fed up to, and after lambing. Lambs are marketed both live and deadweight, with the bigger share going live to Barnard Castle Auction Market. Marketing starts in mid-July and continues through to mid-January.

The results below are for the 2005 lamb crop from the Mule flock and include ewe lambs put to the ram. They show the potential of the Mule ewe to rear a high percentage of lambs per ewe put to the ram, and to achieve target slaughter weight when put to a terminal sire.
